Safe and Specific Preconditioning
Stem cell transplantation (SCT) can cure cancer but the chemotherapy currently used as pretreatment is unspecific and leads to severe side effects, not least in children. We develop a novel concept for safe and specific preconditioning before SCT. By targeting the cell surface protein CD34 with bispecifc antibodies we can direct the patient’s own immune system to specifically kill both leukemic cells and the stem cells that will be replaced by SCT.
